Clancy Newman... had the audience beside itself with his reading of Brahms' Cello Sonata No. 2 (Op. 99). As with all infatuations, the object is easily imbued with extravagant attributes. Let's not do that. Newman's major strength wasn't the usual young-musician burn-a-hole-in-the-floor technique, but a more gratifying synergy with pianist Marcantonio Barone, whose rejection of the conventional brawny Brahms sonority in favor of something lighter, more sinister and coloristically lustrous, must have been inspiring. Amid this, Newman revealed his talent for phrase shadings and shaping full of intuitive eloquence, making each moment new but never perversely so.
